Define Your Brand Idea: Find Your Audience, Position Your Brand, and Build Your Competitive Edge

What’s it for?

This 3-part series is a market research guide and hobby-to-business mental primer built in one. Equipping you with the tools and strategies to be in-the-know of the business world at large and to transform an abstract or evolving brand vision into an actionable and sustainable brand strategy while keeping the sacred love of your passion intact.

Through three iterative rounds of idea refinement, directed in market research and analysis, you’ll have the opportunity to grow into your role as a visionary founder while grounding your brand idea more firmly into reality with every step.

  1. Audience Research: Finding the audience group(s) you genuinely want to connect with.
  2. Competitive Analysis & Self-Evaluation: Realize your brand’s untapped value in the market by understanding the big stage your brand competes on.
  3. Competitive Advantage Brainstorming & Brand Idea Finalization: Define exactly how you can make your brand stand out in a way that feels the most natural to you.

Who is it made for?

Each phase of research and analysis adds a new layer of refinement, guiding you to rewrite and strengthen your brand idea based on the insights you’ve gathered.

To prevent overplanning or analysis paralysis, the scope and direction of each market research and analysis round will be defined by 1–3 focused deliverables:

Phase 1 - Audience Research: Turning Passion into What Others Value

The first round of refinement is about knowing your audience, expanding your personal passion to hold space for the values and needs of the people you’ll come to understand.

You’ll draft the first iteration of your brand idea by defining a general direction of what your brand will be about that stems from your raw vision, and use it to discover the type of people you wish to build a long-term relationship and community with.

This audience research process puts you in the position to treat market research as a way to foster a human understanding with your target audience, sharing your treasured passion with others in a way that they will understand, need, and value.

Phase 2 - Define Your Market Position with Competitive Analysis: Protecting Your Passion and Strengthening Your Business Mindset

The second round of refinement is about discovering where you fit in the market, leveling the playing field with open-source industry knowledge, and setting aside your ego to assume the role of the strategic creative, and visionary owner that’s indicative of your brand’s progress.

You’ll draft the second iteration of your brand idea by finalizing what your brand is about and your target audience by identifying the best market opportunity you can act on based on an objective evaluation of your current capabilities and market dynamics.

This competitive analysis process stretches your horizon to see the possibilities that would otherwise be left unknown and hones your business instincts to strategically settle on an idea with enough flexibility and room for creativity in the midst of surviving in a fast-paced market.

Phase 3 - Visualize Your Brand Idea into the Present: Maximize Your Brand’s Competitive Advantage and Identify Key Areas of Growth

The final round of refinement is about defining the specifics of your unique edge, turning an idea into a brand you can clearly envision its becoming, and leading your strategy efforts with a well-honed competitive advantage.

You’ll finalize your brand idea and complete the foundation of your brand strategy by building out the specifics of your competitive advantage and how you’ll be able to carry it out in a way that’s currently viable, sustainably manageable, and maximizes your brand’s stand-out potential.

This is a brainstorming and analysis process that encompasses all the market research knowledge and insights you’ve gained to turn an idea into a detailed plan where your brand can break into the present reality, which makes taking action on a long-term goal of building out your brand easier.
