This post addresses an often-overlooked pitfall in finding your blog’s purpose: locking yourself into a rigid vision too early.
Exploring a flexible range of topics before committing gives you the clarity, closure, and conviction needed to make future decisions that demand increasing focus and direction.
Below, I’ll turn the often abstract and intangible idea of “finding your purpose” into a clear, replicable process for defining the first iteration of your blog’s purpose by helping you organize and shape the infinite possibilities that your blog could be into a focused, meaningful draft that can then be made feasible in the next phase.
This post includes a summary of my process, showing the step-by-step thinking that went into creating this blog’s first iteration, quieting the confusion that comes with starting out, and giving you a real, relatable example to follow.
Post Highlights
In this blog, you’ll learn how to:
- Widen your blog vision to consider all the possibilities of what your blog could be without narrowing your options too early.
- Use three methods to give you a head start on how to use what you currently have to discover, brainstorm, and add substance to your blog vision.
- Define a clear and effective blog purpose by establishing the value you bring to both your target audience and yourself, positioning yourself as a central, intentional part of the plan.
- Complete this first iteration of your blog’s purpose with a sample excerpt that shows how I applied the methods and strategies in this post to fulfill the deliverables of this phase.
At this stage (the first iteration), we may only have a rough idea of what our blog will be about.
But it is also when we’re the most flexible.
So take your time to dream big without closing off any unexplored potential, which will help you uncover your competitive edge.
In this first iteration, you’re expected to embrace your wildest imaginations of what your blog could become. Those imaginations could stem from your current interests, inspirations, or random thoughts in the shower, all of which add substance to your existing blog idea or change the entire trajectory of your blog.
Sometimes imagination doesn’t have to extend from anything grand or outlandishly creative.
I began this iteration when I had already exhausted most of my creativity and mental energy, having just finished my first 3D design project.
Here are some creative ways to think about what your blog will be about.
- Finding the luster in what has turned mundane: We often overlook the everyday things we do because repetition has made them unassuming. What once felt unique or exciting may now seem too ordinary to share. Repetition is a clue: it means you’ve become so skilled that it’s second nature. Or perhaps it’s a secret personal charm that could make your blog special. What feels mundane could simply be a strength hiding in plain sight that is too valuable to be left unexplored.
- Mesh together what you like and dislike: Even the things we love to do often cross paths with what we dislike. This friction creates an interesting dynamic: a constant stream of plotlines between the hero and villain of your process. It’s not just stories of personal struggle but a compelling narrative device. Purposefully exploring your dislikes through what you love adds tension, complexity, and unpredictability, which sets the stage for suspense and keeps your audience rooting for your win, eager to see what happens next.
- Mix and match interests together: Combining our interests is like inventing new colors to breathe new life into a painting with greater depth and renewed perspective. There may be hobbyists who tell a better story or experts who teach with more precision in any single field. But it’s rare to find someone with your exact mix of skills, passions, and experiences. This is a game of probability where each unique combination is your edge. Creating fresh insights from the overlap of your interests not only sets you apart but often leads to breakthroughs others can’t see.
Create a list of blog ideas. Take pride in building on what you currently have.
Become your blog’s first fan. You must first believe in your blog’s purpose and take an interest in what you do. That’s how your blog will last. A step-by-step approach to turning your interests into a writing habit that sticks.
A blog’s purpose is made up of four components:
- What will the blog be about?
- What value does it bring to me (for your reference only)?
- What value does it bring to others? A simple framework for clarifying what value you actually offer to your audience.
- Who will find your blog the most helpful?
To discover who your blog should serve and the value it will bring, your planning must start with you in mind so others can see its value just as clearly as you do.
- Define what you’re currently doing right now.
- List out the problems you have right now.
- Relate your list of blog ideas to steps 1-2.
- Expand further on blog ideas that you find the most valuable for yourself and others like you. Ways to further expand: post ideas, blog series, content formats, future vision, etc.
Keep in mind that the above sequence of steps is flexible, giving you as much leeway to explore each blog idea further on your terms. You can either first explore what your blog will be about or find inspiration in what you’re currently doing or troubling you the most.
Embracing our wildest imaginations isn’t only about breadth but also the depth of how our curiosities can touch the hearts of others through our own experiences.
See how I uncovered my blog’s purpose during this first iteration.
Iteration #1 Excerpt
What I was doing at the time: Finished the first major 3D architectural visualization project. Selling clothes on Poshmark for about 4 months. Working as a search engine and voice search evaluator. The problems: Inevitable inflation and a challenging job market during and after COVID. Increasing unrest and isolation during the lockdown. Long production times on the 3D project.
⇓ Leads to…
Blog topics I’ve brainstormed: Fashion Begin with: tips, tricks, and recent experience as a reseller at Poshmark. Expand into: shopping tips, styling advice, systems for non-hassle everyday wear, fashion history, buyer’s remorse 3D Interior Design Visualization Begin with: tutorials and design thought process for my completed 3D design projects, including interior design trends, 3D experimentation, before/after room visualization, and 3D industry news review Continuous learning: research, actualize, and troubleshoot interior design and 3D design skills to share knowledge with others. Expand into: 3D printing, alternate realities (VR/AR), and storytelling Content formats: Weekly project videos, tip-sharing shorts
⇓ Leads to…
Why I want to blog (Blog’s Purpose): For myself: I want to use the blog as a portfolio to help me stand out in a digital marketing or 3D interior visualization position for a job market that values technical skills and experience more than ever before. For my audience: I want to use the blog to help others find new excitement in adapting their comfort, mood, and functionality of their living spaces during the prolonged isolation that blurred the lines between work and life.
Here’s what you should’ve completed before going to the next iteration.
- Create a list of topics of what your blog will be about: Focus not only on the quantity but also on the depth of how far you can go with each topic.
- Write a rough draft for your blog purpose: The purpose must include the following 4 components:
- What will the blog be about?
- What value does it bring to me (for your reference only)?
- What value does it bring to others?
- Who will find your blog the most helpful?
Conclusion
Every decision, plan, and idea could be traced back to the blog’s purpose. It is the most fundamental, but often the easiest to overlook and the hardest to interpret.
It is the foundation on which everything else rests, yet it’s often the most overlooked and the hardest to interpret, define, refine, and change.
If we confine ourselves to a limited scope that stifles our growth by not setting aside additional breathing room for future uncertainties and dreams, despite having the most flexibility to explore in the very beginning.
Thus, the process of defining the blog’s purpose requires a delicate calibration process that first requires us to stretch to the wildest imagination of what our blog could become, to comb through and bring closure before settling on a vision without feeling like impostors chasing after a fake mirage that survives on a quick-fuse interest and breaks your focus in the middle of production.
By intentionally loosening your mindspace, you give yourself the freedom to discover your unique edge and the flexibility to adapt and grow a space that won’t cause you or your audience to lose what matters in the long run. A practical framework for staying consistent without burning out.
Dreams only take root when we anchor them in reality, taking us to the next iteration of refining our blog purpose:
“Iteration 1.5: Ground Your Options – Evaluate, Adjust, and Refine to Maximize Feasibility.”
Here, we will evaluate and assess our blog vision based on feasibility and adjust our blog purpose with grounded intention beyond just sounding good on paper.
